Sri Lankan government to take tough measures against software piracy

Sri Lanka Criminal Investigation Department has taken measures to arrest the computer users engaged in software piracy.

A recent survey by the government revealed that 75% of Sri Lanka's computers have pirated copies of software.

Sri Lanka is the second highest in software piracy in Asia next to Bangladesh.

The Criminal Investigation Department says that a number of private companies are among the users of pirated and unlicensed software.

The government warns the offenders that they will be dealt under the intellectual property law unless they register their software immediately.

Those guilty of violating intellectual property laws are liable, upon conviction, to a fine not exceeding 500,000 rupees or for imprisonment for a term not exceeding six months or both.
