Influenza A/H1N1 cases rising in Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka Ministry of Health warns that the Influenza A/H1N1 is rising again in the island.

The Ministry announced that 235 patients have been identified since September 20 this year. Within the past two weeks alone, 61 patients have been diagnosed, the Ministry said.

Four patients of AH1N1 have died in recent times.

A majority of 64 percent patients are from the Western Province, mainly from Colombo. Children age 1-10 group contracted the disease most, according to the Epidemiology Unite of the Ministry.

Meanwhile, the World Health Organization has offered Sri Lanka 1.5 million vaccines to prevent the disease, the Ministry says. The vaccine which costs around Rs. 10,000 per shot is available in main hospitals in the Medial Officer of Health Divisions.

People with chronic diseases such as cardiovascular diseases, renal problems, and diabetes are advised to get the vaccine.

The employees of health, security, Electricity Board, and water supply are also given the vaccine free of charge, the Ministry says.
