Sri Lankan government to establish a media authority

The Sri Lankan government plans to establish a media authority to provide proper guidance for journalists and media institutions.

The draft outlining the establishment of the National Broadcasting Development Authority has already been finalized, Secretary to the Ministry of Mass Media and Information W.B. Ganegala has told the Sri Lanka Broadcasting Corporation.

During the first term of the President, the government has implemented many programs for the welfare of journalists, the Secretary has pointed out. Among them were the training courses offered for at the district level by the Press Council and loan facilities for the journalists to obtain equipments and other required items.

According to the Secretary, a new programme to pay tuition fees for the journalists, who are interested in higher education activities to further their careers, has been launched.

Ganegala has said that a pension scheme for the journalists is under consideration now and it will be established following discussions with the Pensions Department and the Social Protection Board.

The media awards ceremony organized with the objective of felicitating journalists will be held in the first quarter of next year, Ganegala has told SLBC.

The government is to introduce digital technology to the television media within the next five years, the Media Secretary has noted.
