Sri Lanka President to open the hydro power tunnel of Upper Kothmale

Sri Lanka President Mahinda Rajapaksa will open the tunnel of the Upper Kothmale hydro power project Thursday (04), the government said.

Upper Kothmale hydro power tunnel is to be kept open for public view for three days from tomorrow, the government sources say.
The tunnel, considered to be the longest tunnel in the country, is 12.9 Km in length and has a diameter of 5.2 meters. It will channel water from the Kothmale stream to the hydro power station.
The Upper Kothmale Hydropower Project, at a cost of US$ 350 million is mainly funded by the Government of Japan under a loan agreement through the Japan Bank for International Cooperation.
When completed, the project implemented by the Ceylon Electricity Board, is expected to provide 409GWh per year to the national grid with an installed capacity of 150MW.
