Sri Lanka Muslim Congress decides to join the government

Sri Lanka's major Muslim party, Sri Lanka Muslim Congress (SLMC) announced that it had decided to join the government.

The Supreme Council of the SLMC met today and came to the decision, said Hasan Ali, the General Secretary of the party.
At the last general election the SLMC led by Rauf Hakeem contested under the main opposition United National Party (UNP) led opposition alliance United National Front and returned eight MPs to parliament.

The party extended its support to the government in August helping President Mahinda Rajapaksa to secure a two-third majority in the parliament to pass the 18th Amendment to the Constitution.
