Dashing hopes of a credible third front that would take on the DMK-led front and the AIADMK alliance, Nallakanu said there was no possibility of an alternative alliance emerging in Tamil Nadu. "The DMDK leader is not mature enough to lead a political front," he told the media here. Recently, Vijayakanth sprung a surprise saying his party will neither align with the DMK nor the AIADMK for the assembly elections but would probe the possibility of an alternative front.
The former CPI state secretary's remarks also come in the wake of attempts by Left parties to bring AIADMK leader J Jayalalithaa and the actor-turned-politician together. There is also speculation that talks are on between the AIADMK and the DMDK for a tie-up for the state elections scheduled for May next year.
As for growing speculation that AIADMK is keen on aligning with the Congress, the CPI leader said, "It is mere speculation." Addressing mediapersons here, the veteran leader said the CPI would not be part of any alliance that included the BJP or the Congress.
"We would be equidistant from both the national parties," he said. "The BJP is a communal party and the Congress is allowing the US to infringe upon this country's sovereignty," the CPI leader alleged. He criticised the DMK government for not getting the due share of Cauvery water from Karnataka. "The DMK government seems to be least concerned about the Cauvery issue," he said.
On the expansion of the Coimbatore airport, he said those displaced should be offered compensation at "market rates". The governments across the country were following "an antiquated 1894 law" when it comes to acquiring land, be it for airport expansion or for special economic zones (SEZs). The law should be scrapped, he said.
