Vice Chancellor to take strict disciplinary action against university student monks' protest

Vice Chancellor of Sri Lanka's Jayewardenepura University says that strict disciplinary action will be taken against the student monks who had allegedly assaulted university officials.

Vice Chancellor Dr. N. L. A. Karunaratne told local media that less than 20 student monks were involved in the assault. The university hostel for the monks currently houses a total of 105 monks.
According to the Vice Chancellor, the act of several student monks has brought disrepute to other student monks as well.

The local media reported that student monks allegedly assaulted university officials after the Vice Chancellor and few others had made an inspection tour in the University's monk hostel following complaints from residents about the alleged unruly behavior of student monks.

Meanwhile, student monks at the University have launched a protest outside the University gate over allegations that the Vice Chancellor had abused some of the monks when he visited their hostel on Sunday night.

Dr. Karunaratne has said that strict disciplinary action will be taken against the students who assaulted the officials once they are identified.

Many of Sri Lanka's universities have been closed due to student unrests. The government blames the Marxist party Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna backed student unions for clashes in the universities.
