Universities are not exempt from law and unruly students will be dealt accordingly, Sri Lanka President says

Sri Lanka President Mahinda Rajapaksa says that the universities are not exempt from the country's law and the government cannot allow a small group of disgruntled students to disrupt the education in the universities for the majority.

Addressing the university vice chancellors yesterday the President said about two thousand politically motivated students are attempting to upset the education of over 80,000 university students and those unruly students will be dealt with the law prevailing in the country.

Higher Educational Ministry Secretary Dr Sunil Nawaratna has told the government media that the President wants the Laws of the Land to be strictly adhered in all parts of the country.

"A very few students of universities in the country are of the view that the university premises are out bound to law enforcing authorities. There is no more validity for this kind of myths," he has said.

"If there is any place where the decree of the government is considered not valid the security forces will ensure that the decree of the government prevails there like what they did in Kilinochchi in the past by defeating terrorism," Nawaratna has commented.

Majority of students who silently abhor disruptive actions by s few politically motivated students want the government to take stern action against the disrupters, the official said.

The government blames the Marxist JVP backed student unions for attacks on the university administrators as well as on students and other unruly acts.
