Sri Lanka police arrest rebel student union leader

Sri Lanka police today arrested the Convener of the Marxist party Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) affiliated Inter University Students' Federation, Udul Premaratna.

The Police was looking for him to question over damaging the property in the University Grants Commission premises when students affiliated with the union stormed into the Higher Education Ministry earlier this month.

Twenty one more students were arrested over the incident and they have been helld without bail.
Premaratna was leaving the United National Party (UNP) headquarters following a discussion with UNP Deputy Leader Karu Jayasuriya, General Secretary Tissa Attanayake, and youth wing leader Ruwan Wijewardhana when the arrest was made.
Several more representatives of the Inter University Students' Federation were also with Premaratna.
Premaratna, who was a dropped-out dental medical student of the Peradeniya University is reportedly the organizer of student protests at the universities.
