Sri Lanka's Marxist party Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) is to file a petition in Supreme Court today (26) challenging the Bill on Local Government electoral reforms
.The JVP states that certain clauses in the new Bill were in direct conflict with the Constitution and had to be dealt with legally.
The two bills, Local Authorities (Special Provisions) Bill and the Local Authorities Elections (Amendment) Bill presented in parliament last week introduce a new system to elect members to local government bodies through the amendments to the Local Authorities Elections Ordinance.
JVP sources claimed that while the bill has proposed a special mechanism to fill vacancies in seats and candidates, they violated the provisions in the Constitution.
Another aspect pointed out by the Marxist party is the conflict in forming local government divisions according to the new bill which once again violates the constitutional provisions.
Meanwhile, the major Tamil party Tamil national Alliance (TNA) is also to challenge the Bill in courts claiming it paved the way for a two party electoral system in the country.
