Sign language recognized in Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka has accepted sign language as a recognized language in the country. A Cabinet paper submitted in this regard by Minister of Social Services had received the unanimous approval of the Sri Lanka Cabinet.

The recognition of sign language will guarantee the hearing impaired in the country access to information and equal opportunity in the society.

The Minister said the public officials would be encouraged to learn the sign language.
This year's theme of the Day of the Hearing Impaired that falls on September 26 is related to recognition of sign language for improving education of the hearing impaired people.
