Members of Sri Lanka's United National Front (UNF) led by the main opposition United National Party (UNP) have decided to form a broad alliance with the Marxist Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) and the Democratic National Alliance (DNA).
The UNF leaders have decided to initiate a dialogue with other political parties in order to join forces to face the ruling party.
Several political parties including a UNF constituent partner, Democratic People's Front (DPF) led by Mano Ganesan, that an alliance with minor parties would not be sufficient and a broad alliance should be formed.
UNP Matara District MP Mangala Samaraweera has been assigned the task of commencing a dialogue with the JVP while UNP Deputy Leader Karu Jayasuriya has been assigned the task of conversing with DNA Leader Sarath Fonseka's wife, Anoma Fonseka, local Daily Mirror reported.
UNF leaders have decided to meet once again on August 31 for another round of discussions.
