Sri Lanka's former Army Commander says court martial verdict a "joke"

Sri Lanka's former Army Commander and Democratic National Alliance (DNA) parliamentarian General (Retired) Sarath Fonseka, who is currently under military detention, has said that he did not accept the ruling of the first court martial against him.

In a statement to a local media through his wife, Anoma Fonseka, he has termed the sentence of dishonorable discharge from rank pending the President's approval as a "joke."
The first court martial against General Fonseka inquired into allegations that he was engaged in politics while being in active service.
General Fonseka has said the decision handed over by a lower ranking military officials to a four star General was unacceptable and a "humorous joke."
"I have been given a ruling by four low ranking military officers which is a joke for me and the public. No one can accept this ruling," Anoma Fonseka has been reported in the media quoting the General.
The DNA has also claimed that it did not accept the ruling of the first court martial that was held without the defence counsel.
