Sri Lanka's Delimitation Committee to meet in the first week of September

The Delimitation Committee set up by the Sri Lankan government to review and change the existing boundaries of the divisional secretaries and grama niladhari divisions is to meet in the first week of September, local media reports said.

There are currently some 300 divisional secretaries and an estimated 14,000 grama niladharis.
Delimitation Committee Secretary S.K. Weeratunga has been quoted as saying that some 1,500 written submissions have already been received from people and interested organizations.
Some 85 percent of the proposals had sought changes at grama niladhari levels, and the bulk of submissions have been from the Eastern Province.
The Committee has so far received a poor response from the Northern Province.
The 13-member committee, headed by former Central Bank Governor H.B. Dissanayake, is to make recommendations on changing the existing boundaries after studying all requests.
