Sri Lankan court releases DNA MPs on bail

A Sri Lankan court Monday granted bail to the Democratic National Alliance (DNA) parliamentarians who were arrested by the police in Galle last week.

DNA MPs Vijitha Herath, Ajith Kumara, and provincial councilor Nalin Hewage have been released on personal bail by the Galle Magistrate.
The Galle Magistrate released the parliamentarians and the provincial councilor on Rs. 200,000 surety bail each.
The two MPs, the provincial councilor and 10 other DNA members were arrested for the alleged assault of a police officer and unlawful assembly following a demonstration by the DNA led by the Marxist Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna in Galle last Thursday (12).
They were arrested when they went to lodge a complaint at the Galle police after police dispersed a DNA protest rally in the town and arrested the DNA members.
Herath, Kumara, and Hewage have been asked to appear in courts on October 18.
