Sri Lanka Police detains DNA MPs following protest in Galle

The Sri Lanka Police have detained Democratic National Alliance (DNA) parliamentarians Vijitha Herath and Ajith Kumara along with nine other party members including a Southern Provincial Council member in Galle.


The DNA MPs and members were arrested by the Galle Police following a protest held in the town by the DNA against the government and calling for the release of party leader General Sarath Fonseka.
A DNA spokesperson who participated in the protest told ColomboPage that the protest was tear-gassed twice by the Galle police.
Herath and Kumara have been detained along with the Provincial Councilor Naleen Hewage by the police when they had gone to secure the release of the party members in custody with colleague Arjuna Ranatunga.
A DNA member, who is currently in the premises of the Galle Police said that Herath and Kumara were behind bars while Ranatunga was writing the complaint.
The DNA spokesperson said that one party member who sustained injuries during the tear gas attack was receiving treatment at the Galle Hospital.
