President meets the first liver transplant team of doctors in Sri Lanka


Sri Lanka President Mahinda Rajapaksa today at Temple Trees met the team of doctors who performed the first ever liver transplant in Sri Lanka along with the Director of the National Hospital Dr. Hector Weerasinghe.



The team, headed by Prof. Mandika Wijeyaratne, Professor of Surgery at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Colombo, included Lecturer in Surgery and Specialist in Vascular Transplantation Surgery, Dr. Rezni Cassim and Senior Registrar, Vascular and Transplantation Surgery, Dr. Nalaka Gunawansa and, Dr. Ms. Anuja Abayadeera, Senior Lecturer in Anaesthesia at the Colombo Medical Faculty.
Sri Lanka lacked the facilities before to conduct such complex major surgery and patients who needed such treatment and can afford the cost sought treatments in Singapore or in India.
Secretary to the President Lalith Weerathunge was also present at the occasion.
