Arjun ordered Anderson flight: MP CM

Madhya Pradesh chief ministerShivraj Singh Chouhan on Thursday said it was former CM Arjun Singh who had ordered a special flight to carry Union Carbide Corporation chairmanWarren Anderson from Bhopal to New Delhi in December 1984, days after the deadly gas leak.

"I checked the register of the state plane that flew Anderson out of Bhopal to New Delhi. The exact words on the log are: 'Special flight ordered by CM.' The date is December 7, 1984; time 15:15 hours and the pilot identified as Ali Hussain," Chouhan told reporters.

"It's impossible for anyone to use the state plane without the consent and knowledge of the CM. And no government officer would have the courage to arbitrarily name the sitting CM on the log if Arjun Singh did not give that order," Chouhan said.

Breaking his long silence over the sequence of events leading to the release of Anderson just a day after his dramatic arrest for the gas tragedy, Arjun had on Wednesday told the Rajya Sabha that he was released under pressure from then Union home minister PV Narasimha Rao.

Chouhan said it was obvious Arjun was trying to shield someone. "What took Arjun Singh so long to speak? Was he preparing his speech or working out the finer points about who to pass the buck on? Arjun was not only the CM but also a senior Congress leader," Chouhan said, and added, "Does he want us to believe the Union home ministry pressured the state government and he left it to his chief secretary to take a call on Anderson's release?"
