Bar Association of Sri Lanka launches website for National Law Conference


Sri Lanka President Mahinda Rajapaksa yesterday (17) launched the web site for the National Law Conference of the Bar Association of Sri Lanka (BASL) at the Temple Trees.

The website will facilitate the lawyers and public to participate in the process of law-making by giving suggestions and proposals for further improvement of the legal system.

The Bar Association of Sri Lanka is the only official body in the country, representing 9,500 lawyers through a network of 72 branches across the island.
Speaking at the launching of the website www.nationallawconference.com, Minister of External Affairs Prof G. L. Peiris said that the legal system of a country should be modernized from time to time taking into consideration the requirements of the progressing society.
He congratulated the BASL for launching the website so that it would facilitate the lawyers as well as the public to utilize this facility to get directly involved in the developments in the process of law.
National Law Conference is to be held in Colombo on the 23rd and 24th of October 2010. Organizers of the Conference will set in place a programme to garner the information and the responses, and after further deliberation, formulate them as suggestions for reform of the law or of administrative practices. These will be presented at the Conference.
Minister of Justice, Athauda Seneviratne, Attorney General Mohan Peiris, BASL President Shibly Asiz and other office bearers of BASL were present at the occasion.
