Sri Lanka's Public Service Commission spends Rs. 2.5 million as monthly house rent although the Commission is defunct for more than a year now, informed sources say.
Public Service Commission was established under the 17th amendment to the constitution to systemize the appointments, promotions, and transfers of the public sector.
the Commission is defunct since April 08 last year when its term expired. But the Commissioners cannot be appointed since the competent authority for that task is the Constitutional Council which is also defunct due to non-appointment by the President.
However, the Commission office was shifted to a new convenient venue in Colombo 03 recently from the former office in Vauxhall Street for which the rent was Rs. 800,000.
Public Service Commission has a staff of 120 employees who now idle without proper task.
