Sri Lanka's Marxist party says tax cuts a ploy to increase government's tax revenue

Sri Lanka's Marxist party Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna has said that the recent tax reductions introduced by the government was a ploy to increase its tax revenue.

JVP led Democratic National Alliance parliamentarian Sunil Handunnetti has been quoted in the local media as saying that the government had adopted a jackpot style approach to increase its revenue.
He has explained that since high taxes discourage imports resulting in a decline in the government's tax revenue, the decision to reduce taxes on imported vehicles would increase the number of vehicles being imported to the country. This, he has said would increase the government's tax revenue.
Handunnetti has charged that the government was not interested in providing relief to the people, as in such an event the government would have slashed taxes on essential items.
