Sri Lanka's main opposition United National Party (UNP) Thursday called for abolishing the Executive Presidency and creation of an Executive Prime Minister.
Addressing a media briefing today in Colombo, UNP Deputy Leader Karu Jayasuriya said that the Executive Presidency should be abolished without being subjected to any amendments like the proposed extension of the term of office of an Executive President.
He observed that the government should not attempt to make constitutional amendments in an ad hoc manner without consulting other political parties and the general public of the proposed amendments.
Jayasuriya said that people, including political parties have learnt about the proposed constitutional amendments only through various media reports.
