Sri Lankan court names former Army Commander as a suspect in Hicorp case
Sri Lanka's former Army Commander and Democratic National Alliance (DNA) parliamentarian retired General Sarath Fonseka has been ordered to appear before court on June 23 as a suspect in the controversial Hicorp case.
Colombo Fort Magistrate and Additional District Judge Lanka Jayaratne today (16) named General Fonseka, who is currently under military detention facing two general courts martial, as a suspect in the Hicorp case.
The Hicorp case involves an alleged arms deal that had taken place during General Fonseka's tenure as Army Chief. One of the courts martial against the former Army Commander is over the alleged irregularities in several military procurements during Fonseka's time.
General Fonseka's son-in-law, Danuna Tilakaratne, Danuna Tilakaratne, who as the president of Hicorp International and the British Borneo Defence, is accused of earning profits from arms procurement deals of the Army that were awarded to him by the former Army Commander during the war with the LTTE.
Danuna is evading arrest and his whereabouts are currently unknown.
