The Reforms Committee to restructure Sri Lanka's main opposition United National Party is currently discussing the mechanism to be adopted for elections to choose members to senior posts in the party.
Chairman of the six-member committee, parliamentarian Joseph Michael Perera said that the Working Committee has accepted the reforms in principal and is now awaiting ratification at the party convention to be held in August.
Perera said that while the reforms have been finalized, the committee was now exploring ways to formulate a mechanism to elect members to key party posts.
"The party has accepted the reform to elect members to key position if a consensus cannot be reached. Therefore, we have to formulate a mechanism on how to conduct the election process when required," he said.
According to Perera, the Reforms Committee is still meeting with party members to receive their views on the party reforms. "We want to meet with the UNP local government members," he said.
