President reviews arrangements for upcoming Poson festival in Sri Lanka's sacred Anuradhapura city

Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa paid homage to the most sacred Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi in Anuradhapura this morning ahead of the upcoming Pososn observations in the city.

Atamasthanadhipathi Venerable Pallegama Siri Niwasa Thera chanted Seth Pirith for the President Rajapaksa. The President also participated in religious ceremonies conducted at the Ruwanweli Seya.
Later, President Rajapaksa held a special meeting with the Poson committee at the Presidential house in Anuradhapura and advised the relevant authorities to provide all necessary facilities to the pilgrims arriving in Anuradhapura and Mihintale for the Poson festival.
The President instructed the Poson committee to take necessary actions to provide sanitary facilities and other basic needs of pilgrims.
President Rajapaksa also paid special attention on motor traffic plan operating in the Anuradhapura city during the Poson season and instructed the officials to arrange life saving units in the vicinity of giant tanks (water reservoirs), as the tanks are full due to the recent rains.
Public sector organizations, the Police, the Security Forces, health and the transportation sectors have jointly made arrangements to observe the Poson week and the Poson festival.
According to the District Secretary of Anuradhapura H.M.K. Herath around two million devotees are expected in Anuradhapura from all over the country including the North and East for the first time. Around 150 Dansalas will be set up in the area.
The District Secretary warns the public to take exercise extreme caution when bathing in the tanks and urged the devotees not to pollute the environment.
