In a statement to mark World Press Freedom Day, Silva has stated that the occasion for impartial scrutiny has dawned on the country now as to what policy should be followed by Sri Lankans, for the fulfillment of objectives enunciated by the Press Day.
"From a media functioning in a war torn country we are ascending to a media functioning in a free country. I am confident that the new situation that has succeeded war has the potential to clear the obstacles to media freedom," he has stated.
Silva has further stated, "On the other hand facilities should be provided for training of journalists, establishment of training institutions, and provision of housing schemes and implementation of a pension scheme, at the same time we must not forget that we should preserve country's moral values."
"The World Press Freedom Day commemorated by us for the first time after ushering in peace on conclusion of the 30 year long war should be recognised as the beginning of a new media culture in Sri Lanka," the statement concludes.
