Tamil Nesan denies exaggerating shootout report

the Tamil Nesan has denied that it exaggerated when reporting on the news of five Indian youths being shot dead by police in a shootout last week.

Chairman of the 86-year-old Tamil daily Datin Seri Indrani Samy Vellu said the editorial had only published what the police told them.

“As a Tamil daily, it is incumbent on our part to highlight news and matters pertaining to our community,” Indrani said in statement on Monday.

The statement is in relation to a Home Ministry letter sent to the daily last Friday seeking an explanation over the paper’s coverage of the fatal shootout between the five and police.

She said that the paper had not written stories that disturbed public peace and harmony in the past.

“We will not publish any story and material that will arouse the emotions of the Indian community and incite the community to go against the police or the Government,” she added.
