Army sources said the US government had informed the Sri Lankan government through the US ambassador in Sri Lanka that permission could not be given for Chief of Defence Staff General Sarath Fonseka to attend an international conference of military chiefs scheduled to be held in Hawaii and that neither the President nor the Defence Ministry had made any statement in this regard.
The US ambassador had informed the General of the US government’s decision when they met for a discussion recently.
Sources further noted that although the President claimed on public platform that he would stand by any member of the forces who is accused of war crimes or any other charges, the silence maintained by him and the government was despicable to say the least and that the issue has now raised concern among forces personnel of their plight in future given the government’s stance in relation to a former forces chief.
Although the General official visit has now been cancelled he left for the US on Friday (23) to visit his daughter.
