U.S. calls on Sri Lankan government to fulfill its commitments to its own people


Following the adoption of a United States-sponsored resolution by the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) on Sri Lanka in Geneva Thursday, the United States called on the Government of Sri Lanka to fulfill its public commitments to its own people.

Resolution on Sri Lanka adopted at the UNHRC with the votes of 25 countries


The United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) on Thursday adopted the resolution sponsored by the United States with 25 votes in favor, 13 against and 8 abstentions. Adopting the resolution, the 47-member UNHRC reiterated its call made in the resolution adopted last year for Sri Lanka to effectively implement the constructive recommendations made in the report of the Lessons Learnt and Reconciliation Commission (LLRC) and to take all necessary measures to initiate credible and independent actions to ensure justice, equity, accountability and reconciliation for all Sri Lankans.

UNHRC disassociates itself from the screening of Channel-4 documentary on Sri Lanka at the UN premises


The United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) has disassociated itself from today's screening of the Channel 4 film "No Fire Zone: The Killing Fields of Sri Lanka" at the UN premises in Geneva.

Sri Lanka to brief UNHRC on progress of investigations into high-profile killings in the East

The Attorney Generals' Department of Sri Lanka is to brief the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) on the progress of investigations into the high-profile killings that took place in the East in 2006, while the cease fire agreement was still in effect. A team of three senior Deputy Solicitors General will participate in the UNHRC sessions and respond to any queries on the investigations into the killing of five Tamil youth in Trincomalee and the killing of 17 local aid workers of the French aid agency Action Against Hunger in Muttur in 2006.
