The Tamil Nadu government on Wednesday decided to impose entertainment tax on direct-to-home (DTH) service providers and the Indian Premier League (IPL) cricket matches. A Bill, which was passed unanimously in the assembly, said DTH services will attract 30% entertainment tax, while 25% tax will be levied on IPL matches. The government also decided to increase the entertainment tax on cinema tickets from 15% to 30%.

Govt directed to tax IPL matches
The Madras high court on Wednesday directed the state government to make the necessary amendment to include sports under the Tamil Nadu Entertainment Tax Act, 1939; probably within four weeks. A petition by Sakthi Vasan of Valasarawakkam had sought to regulate the conduct of IPL matches in the state according to the Tamil Nadu Entertainment Tax and Tamil Nadu Cinemas Regulation Act.
