Public and private sector trade unions in Sri Lanka are engaged in a discussion on the action to be taken to win their long standing demands. The discussion has been organized by the National Trade Union Center (NTUC) and the first meeting was held yesterday under the patronage of NTUC Head, K.D. Lalkantha. Representatives of health, railway, port, universities and private sector trade unions had also participated in the meeting. Lalkantha has said that the main aim of the discussion was to reach a common consensus on carrying out a broader and stronger struggle to win the demands of the trade unions including salary hikes for the working people. He has observed that trade unions affiliated to the governing party and opposition should unite for a common cause like the betterment of the working people. He has added that the government has not granted a proper salary hike for the public sector workers last year and the private sector has not been given an increment since 2005.
