Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa left for India today on a two-day personal visit, the President's office said.
The President will visit Bodh Gaya in Bihar and Tirupati in Andhra Pradesh for religious purposes.
Sri Lanka High Commissioner to India Prasad Kariyawasam has said that the President is expected to meet the Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar during his visit to Bodh Gaya.
However, the President will not be visiting New Delhi, officials said.
Meanwhile, pro-Eelam Tamil political parties in Tami Nadu State have vowed to protest the President's visit.
Indian media reported that the DMK leader M. Karunanidhi is leading a black flag protest in Chennai while the pro-LTTE MDMK leader Vaiko has spearheaded a protest in New Delhi demanding the President to return.
The High Commissioner has said that despite the private nature of the visit, Indian authorities have assured full protection for the President during his visit to the country.
