Sri Lanka main opposition to appoint a deputy leader tomorrow

The working committee of Sri Lanka's main opposition United National Party (UNP) will meet tomorrow to decide on the party Deputy Leader position.
UNP sources say that a proposal to appoint four deputy leaders will be taken for discussion at the Working Committee meeting tomorrow. However, a party senior said that a constitutional amendment is needed to appoint more than one individual for the position of Deputy Leader. Sajith Premadasa, Ravi Karunanayaka, Lakshman Kiriella and Kabir Hashim have been considered as deputy leaders, the sources said. Last year Sajith Premadasa has served as the deputy leader and before that Karu Jayasuriya and Premadasa served as co-deputy leaders. Senior UNP officials are scheduled to meet today to discuss this issue ahead of the working committee meeting, a party spokesman said.
