Sri Lanka Minister of Justice Rauf Hakeem says the government is considering to appoint a lawyer at each police station in the island to facilitate legal advice for the suspects that are in custody.
The Minister further said for the first time in the history the suspects will be allowed to discuss with lawyers while in police custody.
The suspects will have the right to speak to a relative over the phone, he added.
The Minister made these observations addressing the parliament at the end of the debate on the bill proposed to extend the detention period for the suspects in police custody without a warrant to 48 hours.
The bill was passed in parliament by a majority of 77 votes. It received 110 votes in favor while 33 were against it. MPs of opposition United National Party, Democratic National Alliance and Tamil National Alliance voted against the bill.
