Sri Lanka main opposition discusses to bury the hatchet among leaders

Senior leaders of Sri Lanka's main opposition United National Party (UNP) are holding discussing to make peace within the party that is plagued with internal rifts.
A discussion has been held on January 24 under the patronage of UNP leader Ranil Wickremasinghe to iron out the differences in the party. Former Deputy Leader Sajith Premadasa, General Secretary Tissa Attanayake, Chairman Gamini Jayawickrama, Chief Opposition Whip MP John Amaratunga, National Organizer Daya Gamage, Assistant Leader Joseph Michael Perera and General Treasurer Senarath Kapukotuwa participated in the discussion, according to party sources. Sources say that the discussion was cordial and led to an agreement between the party leader Wickremasinghe and former Deputy Leader Premadasa to work on a common party agenda without following individual goals. Another discussion is scheduled to be held on January 28 and a final decision regarding reappointing Sajith Premadasa as Deputy Leader may be taken on that day, UNP internal sources said. UNP Ranil Wickremasinghe has asked more time from the Working Committee to consider the appointment of a deputy leader to the party. The party is also considering appointing more than one deputy leader, sources say.
