Sri Lanka's main opposition to appoint key office bearers next month

Sri Lanka's main opposition United National Party (UNP) is to appoint key office bearers including the deputy leader next month.
The UNP on Saturday held its 54th convention where party leader Ranil Wickremasinghe's tenure was extended by six years. UNP General Secretary Tissa Attanayake had said the party leader would nominate persons to the posts of deputy leader, chairman and national organizer and other key positions. He had observed that any other nominations to the posts should be submitted with signatures of one third of the members of the Working Committee. In the event there are more than one name for a post, an election for the post would be held in the Working Committee. The UNP constitution provides for the general secretary and the treasurer to be appointed by the party leader.
