Sri Lanka Tamil leader's statement on army presence in North condemned by Tamil political party
A statement made by Sri Lanka's Tamil National Alliance (TNA) Leader R. Sampanthan in parliament on the military presence in the North has been criticized by another Tamil political party.
The Tamil National People's Front (TNPF) has criticized Sampanthan's statement to parliament that he did not find anything wrong in military intelligence personnel functioning in the North and the camps continued where they had been before the war without interfering with civilian life.
"We are not demanding the total withdrawal of the armed forces. They should be there as they are in any other part of the country," Sampanthan has said in parliament, adding that they can maintain their intelligence and carry out surveillance since it is their legitimate duty.
However, TNPF Leader Gajendra Kumar Ponnambalam and Secretary S. Gajendran have issued a statement saying the TNA leader's remarks were misleading the Tamil people.
The TNPF has questioned why the TNA had attended the 2011 New Delhi talks of Tamil parties to demand complete withdrawal of the military if it did not want the military removed from the entire north.
The TNPF has called upon everyone to protect the Tamil people at a time when the military and the police were arresting civilians and university students in an authoritarian manner.
