Sri Lanka and Afghanistan have agreed to expand the political and economic relations between them and to cooperate in defense and education as well during the discussions held between the foreign ministers of the two countries.
Afghanistan Foreign Affairs Minister, Dr. Zalmai Rassoul, who arrived in Sri Lanka on a three-day official visit, met his Sri Lankan counterpart External Affairs Minister Prof. G.L. Peiris at the Foreign Ministry today (19).
Dr. Rassoul, accompanied by senior officials of the Afghanistan Foreign Affairs Ministry, held discussions with the Sri Lankan Minister on the bilateral relations between the two countries and exchange views on regional and international issues of common interest.
Following the bilateral talks between the two ministers, an agreement on a wide range of cooperation that covers economic, education and scientific technology was signed.
A Memorandum of understanding on cultural cooperation was also signed by the Sri Lankan Minister of Culture and Arts, T. B. Ekanayake and the visiting Minister, Dr. Rassoul.
Minister Peiris pointing out that Sri Lanka and Afghanistan share common ideals, as well as challenges, has said that both countries face the challenges of terrorism, Sri Lanka from the LTTE, while defeated in the country but still active overseas, and Afghanistan from the Taliban.
The two ministers also discussed collaboration in defense and education. Minister Peiris said his government is willing to share their experience with Afghanistan.
"We have now signed two agreements which will constitute the building blocks for consolidating and strengthening this economic relationship. We also talked about collaboration in the services sector, development sector with a particular focus on education. We are happy to share with Afghanistan that reservoir of experience," Minister Peiris was quoted.
Prof. Peiris further said that Sri Lanka will establish a mission in Kabul, with a view to strengthen diplomatic relationship with the people of Afghanistan.
The Afghan Minister has congratulated the Sri Lankan government for defeating the terrorism and said there were excellent relations between Afghanistan and Sri Lanka in various spheres of common interest.
"The relation between Afghanistan and Sri Lanka is important for the wellbeing of the region. Our future is in the region," Dr. Rassoul has said.
Dr. Rassoul is the first Afghan Foreign Affairs Minister to visit Sri Lanka. He is scheduled to meet President Mahinda Rajapaksa.
