The general assembly of Sri Lanka's main opposition United National Party has approved a proposal to amend the party constitution to extend the mandate of the leader and other senior officials up to six years.
The proposal to hold elections to appoint senior party leaders every six years was approved with a huge majority at the general assembly convened today (December 01) at the party headquarters Sirikotha. Out of the 5,315 members at the assembly, 4,978 voted in favor and 337 voted against. Accordingly the opposition leader Ranil Wickremasinghe will be UNP leader for another six years. The deputy leader of UNP Sajith Premadasa and pro-reform MPs Karu Jayasuriya, Dayasiri Jayasekara and Buddhika Pathirana had opposed the proposal.
