Train services and road transport in several areas have been obstructed due to heavy rain and five people including a 16-year-old girl have died due to earth slips in the country, Sri Lanka's Disaster Management Center (DMC) said Monday.
Roads leading to several towns, especially in the North Central Province are submerged totally disrupting the transport services.
Rail services on the northern railway line between Kurunegala and Wellawa has been disrupted dueto a train derailing between Thalawa and Thambuththegama. The derailed train was cleared on Monday.
However, local media reported that the railway services between Kurunegala and Wellawa has been suspended due to floods.
Heavy showers lashing the Central Province for two days have caused numerous earth slips killing five people and closing several roads in the central hill region.
It has been reported that the Kandy Railway Station has been inundated due to heavy showers. The main Kandy-Matale Road is reportedly blocked at Akurana due to flash flood.
Sluice gates of several reservoirs have been opened to discharge the excess water cautioning the residents in low lying areas to be vigilant.
According to the authorities 4 sluice gates of the Walawa reservoir were opened today due to the rise in the water level while 2 sluice gates of the Sevenagala reservoir have been opened.
Since the prevailing bad weather condition is expected to continue within the next 24 hours, the National Building Research Organization has issued a Level 2 warning for the residents of Kandy, Nuwara Eliya, Badulla except Mahiyangana to be alert on the possibility of landslides, rock falls and cut slope.
All roads in those districts are susceptible to landslides, the NBRO warned.
The DMC says it has taken quick measures to provide relief to those affected by the adverse weather. Nearly 200 families in 3 villages in the Kurunegala district are given cooked meals and other facilities. The affected roads are also being restored with the assistance of Army.
Meanwhile, the Meteorology Department has forecasted more rain and fairly strong North-easterly winds over the island.
