Steady breakdown in the rule of law in Sri Lanka - opposition MP

Sri Lanka's main opposition United National Party (UNP) parliamentarian Mangala Samaraweera says that there's a steady breakdown in the rule of law in the country.
He has noted that the rule of law in Sri Lanka, which is the world's oldest democracy, is facing a breakdown due to the power obsession of the rulers. Samaraweera has told parliament that the rulers of the country were trying to snatch the crown of the judiciary to wear it on their heads. He has noted that the judiciary is being strangled and attempts are being made to destroy its independence. According to Samaraweera, the Rajapaksa rule is based on various charges being leveled against those who oppose or criticize the current rule. He has added that charges are not leveled against persons who support the current administration. "In the 1776 American Revolution, a foremost theoretician, Tom Paine said that in a democratic civilized country, the Rule of Law should prevail, it is the law which should reign and not a king," Samaraweera has said. -->
