Sri Lankan court issues arrest warrant against journalist Frederica Jansz

Sri Lanka Court of Appeal yesterday issued a warrant to arrest and produce former editor-in-chief of The Sunday Leader Frederica Jansz in court on January 17. The Court of Appeal issued the warrant since Jansz failed to appear in court yesterday for a show cause order in a case filed against her by parliamentarian Thilanga Sumathipala for defamation. The case was taken up by the Appellate Court judge S. Skandharaja yesterday and the when the journalist did not appear in court, the counsel appearing for the plaintiff requested the court to issue a warrant to arrest her. The judge ordered Ms. Jansz to appear in court today and postponed the case to January 17. Reportedly, Ms. Jansz sacked from her post as editor-in-chief of The Sunday Leader, is seeking political asylum in Australia. Australia last month rejected an asylum request by the editor who had claimed that her life is in danger due to her writings critical of the government. Australian immigration officials have ruled that Ms. Jansz does not face persecution by the Sri Lankan government as she claimed.
