Main opposition of Sri Lanka raises questions over satellite launch

Sri Lanka's main opposition United National Party (UNP) says there were many doubts over today's launch of the SupremeSAT - 1 communication satellite.
UNP General Secretary Tissa Attanayake told a news conference today that the government needed to reveal the truth behind the satellite and who actually initiated the programme and noted that government officials made contradictory statements. He referred to the statement made by the Head of the Telecommunications Regulatory Commission (TRC) Anusha Palpita that the Sri Lankan government had no connection with this satellite and this was only a transaction between two companies. The other comment noted by Attanayake was the statement made by Science and Technology Senior Minister Tissa Vitharana that Sri Lanka was going to launch a satellite owned by the government. Attanayake questioned the reason for implying the launching of the satellite as a government initiative if it's a transaction between two companies. He questioned the government's connection to the nearly US$360million SupremeSAT project. According to Attanayake, citizens of Sri Lanka have the right to know the conditions of this contract since the future generation seems to have been mortgaged to China through this transaction.
