DMK chief not satisfied with Sri Lanka's rehabilitation of Tamils

Leader of India's Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) party M. Karunanidhi has expressed his dissatisfaction at the progress Sri Lanka has made in the rehabilitation and resettlement of internally-displaced Tamils in the country. Speaking to media after chairing a meeting of the Tamil Eelam Supporters Organization (TESO) in Chennai, the former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister has reportedly said
that according to the information he received, the rehabilitation and resettlement process is not satisfactory. Welcoming the Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's assurance to him earlier that India placed the "highest and most important" priority on resettlement and rehabilitation of displaced Tamils, the DMK leader has asked the central government (of India) to take the lead ahead of Colombo to ensure the Tamil's welfare. The TESO also calls for the Indian government to move a resolution in the UN to demand its intervention to allow the Sri Lankan Tamils to decide their rights for self-governing. Karunanidhi has called for more cooperation from the Centre to address the grievances of the Sri Lankan Tamils, who allegedly had perennially been "at the receiving end of the Sinhalese." The DMK plans to send party Treasurer MK Stalin and DMK MP TR Baalu to hand over a resolution adopted by TESO conference held on August 12 on Sri Lankan Tamils, to the UN. The global humanitarian agencies including the UN have been impressed with Sri Lanka's progress in resettlement and rehabilitation of nearly 300,000 Tamils displaced at the end of the war in May 2009. Sri Lanka last month completed its resettlement process and closed the Manik Farm camps that housed the displaced Tamils. Indian media reports citing political analysts say the DMK, which was accused of not doing enough for the Lankan Tamils' cause when it was in power in Tamil Nadu, is now trying to use the issue to get more seats in 2014 Lok Sabha polls. -->
