Sri Lanka Navy implements an extensive program for territorial protection

The Sri Lanka Navy says that it has implemented an extensive program to protect Sri Lanka's sea territory from outside threats. Navy Commander Vice Admiral Somathilaka Dissanayake has told the state-run radio SLBC that under the instruction of Defence Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa a defence programme has been organized to minimize outward threats to the country.
Under the program the number of navy bases and jetties has been increased and modern technology and radar systems are being used at maximum level. Currently the Sri Lanka Navy has grown to a strong position and there is a heavy demand from many foreign countries for vessels manufactured by Sri Lanka Navy, the Navy Commander has said. Meanwhile, the Navy said today that it had apprehended five persons engaged in human smuggling on Saturday. A Fast Naval Patrol Craft attached to the Eastern Naval Command had intercepted a multi-day fishing trawler with five people and arrested the occupants. The suspects had been brought to Trincomalee Harbor along with the boat and handed over to the CID for further investigations.
