Sri Lanka Muslim party leader to support ruling party to establish Eastern PC administration

Minister Rauf Hakeem, the leader of Sri Lanka's major Muslim party, Sri Lanka Muslim Congress has pledged the support of his party to the ruling party to establish the Eastern Provincial Council administration. Minister Hakeem has expressed his support when the leaders of constituent parties of the ruling alliance met with the President at the Temple Trees today.
The SLMC winning 7 seats at the Eastern PC elections held Saturday became the king maker when none of the parties won a clear majority. However, the Supreme Council of the SLMC is due to convene tonight to decide on its allegiance in the East, the local radio Hiru FM reported. At the elections, the ruling United People's Freedom Front won the majority with 14 seats and the major Tamil party Tamil National Alliance (TNA) which contested the elections on a self-rule platform won 11 seats in the Muslim and Tamil dominated Province. The major opposition United national party won 4 seats and government ally National Freedom Front won one seat. The UNP has agreed to support the TNA, the former proxy party of the terrorist group LTTE to set up administration of the Eastern Province. A majority of 19 seats is required to establish power in the 35-member Council and the UPFA with the seven seats of SLMC would have a total of 22 seats. The TNA with the support of UNP and SLMC will also have 22 seats. General Secretary of the UPFA Susil Premajayantha has expressed confidence that the alliance will establish power in the East. President Mahinda Rajapaksa meanwhile had extended his gratitude towards the party leaders for ensuring the UPFA's victory during Saturday's polls.
