MDMK leader Vaiko wants to lift India's ban on Sri Lanka's terrorist group LTTE

The pro-LTTE Tamil Nadu political leader, the general secretary of the Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (MDMK), V. Goplasamy aka Vaiko has renewed his call to remove Sri Lanka's vanquished terrorist group Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) from the banned list of terrorist organizations in India. Vaiko had informed the Indian media that he has argued before the tribunal court in Chennai on the ban and provided the court with documents to support his request. The MDMK leader has told the court that he wanted to know how many cases have been framed against the supporters of LTTE in the past 24 months and how many organizations have been branded as pro-LTTE organizations in Tamil Nadu.
The court has said that there were many cases but has not specified a number. "I asked him (the judge) about any cases registered against the supporters or any agents of LTTE for an attempt to forge understanding with the Maoists and other organizations because it was mentioned here. For that also he could not give any answer," Vaiko has said. Vaiko is to place his arguments in the court on Saturday for seeking revocation of ban on LTTE. The central government of India extended the ban on LTTE in July 2012 saying that it is necessary to declare the group as an 'unlawful association' since it continues to adopt a strong anti-India posture and pose a grave threat to the security of its citizens. The Indian government declared the LTTE a banned organization in 1994 after an LTTE suicide bomber assassinated former Indian Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi in 1991. -->
