Legislator of Sri Lanka's main opposition banned from addressing public party rallies.

Sri Lanka major opposition United National Party (UNP) sources say that the controversial UNP parliamentarian Dayasiri Jayasekara has been suspended from addressing election campaign rallies for the provincial council elections slated for September 08. UNP has taken this decision based on the fact that all UNP members who are under disciplinary probes will not be allowed to address public from the UNP stage. MP Jayasekara has said that
he was prevented from addressing meetings yesterday in Kantale of Trincomalee district. However, before the party headquarters took the action, he has addressed several meetings. UNP sources say that the leadership is informed of attempts by several MPs to recommence criticizing leadership. UNP suspects MP Jayasekera is criticizing the leadership in connivance with the government, party sources say. Jayasekara has appeared before the party disciplinary committee last Thursday to face the charges brought against him by the party leadership. The party leadership has accused the legislator with eight charges that his actions were in violation of the party's best interests and led to tarnish its image. The local media reported that the MP had discussions with the ruling party top shots and the President considering to crossover to the government side. However, the MP denies that he was seeking to crossover.
