Sri Lanka's Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Development Ministry said that 11 fishermen released from Indian custody will return to the country on August 06.
Indian Coast Guard has released the 11 fishermen who were arrested by the Indian authorities for crossing the International Maritime Boundary Lines (IMBL) and straying into the Indian waters in the seas off Andra Pradesh and their two fishing vessels. The two vessels, which left the Trincomalee fisheries harbor with the 11 fishermen, were seized by the Indian authorities on May 15 and 22 this year. The Ministry sources had told the local Daily News that the fishermen were released following the intervention of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Development Minister Dr. Rajitha Senaratne and the government had to pay Rs. 925,000 as fines to get them released. The Minister has urged the fishermen not to cross the IMBL as the government has to spend a lot of money for the welfare of fishermen. According to the Ministry there are no more Sri Lankan fishermen in Indian custody.
