Sri Lanka opposition leader betrayed party presidential campaign in 1994 - SLFP

Minister Maithripala Sirisena, the General Secretary of Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP), the main constituent party of the ruling alliance, says the leader of the main opposition United National Party (UNP) Ranil Wickremasinghe betrayed the campaign strategy of party's presidential candidate Gamini Dissanayaka in 1994.
At a political rally in Polonnaruwa yesterday, the Minister has said that then party senior Ranil Wickremasinghe gave details of UNP Presidential candidate Gamini Dissanayaka's campaign to then opposition candidate, former President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga aiming to defeat Dissanayaka at the election. Dissanayaka died in a suicide attack by the Tamil Tiger terrorist group Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) and his wife Srima Dissanayaka who substituted for him lost to Kumaratunga. The Minister has vowed that he could prove it. Addressing an election meeting of the North Central Provincial Council held in Polonnaruwa, Minister Sirisena urged the UNP members not to trust a leader like Ranil Wickremasinghe.
